Located on Hailey Road, in the heart of Central Delhi, amidst the city’s modern architecture, you’ll find one of Delhi’s most ancient landmarks, Agrasen ki Baoli, also spelled as Ugrasen ki Baoli. As a passionate enthusiast of all things old and ancient, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit Agrasen ki Baoli in Delhi. History
Agrasen ki Baoli, known as a “Baoli” means Step-well, is an ancient underground water storage system in Delhi, India. These stepwells were built to address water scarcity during seasonal fluctuations in ancient India. Delhi used to have around 100 such stepwells, but most are now abandoned due to modern water storage facilities. Agrasen ki Baoli, constructed during Maharaja Ugrasen’s reign, measures 60m North-South and 15m wide. It showcases remarkable craftsmanship resembling late Lodhi or Tughlaq period architecture.

The baoli features a flight of steps leading down to the stepwell in the north, with huge concrete walls on both sides and arched corridors. It has 108 steps, allowing people to access the well as the water level fluctuated. Similar stepwells can be found in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Other famous baolis in Delhi include Rajon Ki Baoli, Gandhak Ki Baoli, Old Fort Baoli, Red Fort Baoli, and the one near Nizamuddin Dargah. Agrasen ki Baoli is particularly popular among tourists. Rani ki Vav and Modhera Step Well in Gujarat also offer a spectacular glimpse into this architectural heritage.
