Its enchanting beauty also draws in a significant number of tourists. Yes, you guessed it right—I’m talking about the Mahakaleshwar Ujjain Temple.

About temple

The Ujjain Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. The chief god of the temple – Lord Shiva – is assumed to be in the form of Swayambhu, stemming streams of power or Shakti from within. Lord Shiva is also known as the god of destruction. It is mentioned in many Hindu epics that Lord Shiva had killed a demon here named ‘Tirupur’. Every 12 years, the biggest Religious fair of Hindus, ‘The Kumba’ , is held here. The structure

The expansive temple rests beside Rudra Sagar Lake and comprises three levels. The Mahakaleshwar Lingam is placed at the lower part, while Nagachandresvara resides at the highest tier, visible only during the Nag Panchmi festival. Intricate sculptures adorn both inner and outer walls, dating back to the Parmar period. Towards the east lies a spacious veranda leading to the Sanctum (Garbhgraha). On the temple’s north side, statues of Lord Rama and Goddess Avantika stand, while the south side hosts several smaller temples built during the Shinde reign. Within the temple complex lies the grand Koti Tirtha, designed in the sarvatobhadra style. The temple’s towering spire ascends skyward, featuring captivating north-Indian architectural elements on its exterior.

The temple architecture is a perfect blend of Bhumija,Maratha and Chalukya styles . Hence, needed applause and necessary appreciation.

Opening hours of Mahakaleshwar Temple Ujjain: 3 am – 11 pm Don’t miss: Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga bhasma aarti at 4 am; daily.
Aarti which happens at 4 am sharp is one of the major attractions . The divine ceremony includes worshipping the idol with holy ash brought from the ghats and applied with sacred chants.

The nearest airport to Ujjain is Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport in Indore, approximately 55 kilometres away.
