Initially taken aback by her unusual appearance with three breasts, they received reassurance from divine voice, which promised that the third breast would disappear upon her marriage to her future husband. King Malayadwaja named her Meenakshi and later crowned her as his successor.
Meenakshi reigned over the ancient city of Madurai and expanded her dominion by conquering neighboring lands, including Indralok, the celestial abode of Lord Indra. According to legend, she set out to capture Kailash, the sacred abode of Lord Shiva, when their fateful meeting occurred. Upon their encounter, her third breast miraculously vanished, symbolizing their destined union. Their wedding in Madurai was a divine affair attended by gods and goddesses, with Lord Vishnu, Parvati’s brother, giving Meenakshi’s hand in marriage to Lord Shiva. Notable ones include the Kadaka Gopuram, which leads to the main shrine of Goddess Meenakshi, and the Sundareshwara Gopuram, one of the oldest, guiding visitors to the shrine of Lord Shiva. Another remarkable ‘gopuram’ is the Mottai Gopuram, unique for its lack of a roof for three centuries. Within the temple complex, you’ll find numerous pillared halls called ‘Mandapams.’ These halls were commissioned by various kings and emperors and provided resting places for pilgrims and devotees.
